Vesak Festival

Vesak Festival falls in the month of May every year. Vesak is one of the most noble and th greatest festivals of Buddhists throughout the world. They celebrate the sublime Triple noble incidents of the Lord Buddha; the birth, the Enlightenment and the passing away. Buddhists all over the world engage in many religious activities on thi scared day.

Almost all the Buddhists homes are decorated colourfully with many things like Vesak lanterns and decorating papers in honour of the Lord Buddha. Devotees throng to temples in white throughout the day but mostly in the evening. Many people observe Sil and they spend the whole day in temples. Some other people organize "Dansals" in which food and beverages are given free of charge. It is a usual sight erecting pandols in many places in the country. The majority of Buddhists spend this day performing many religious activities.

Singing songs of devotion is a common sight in many places in the country. Some organizations conduct devotionals song competitions and Vesak Lantern conpetitions everywhere in the country. All these things are done in honour of the Lord Buddha. Buddhists refrain from eating meat on this day. Further, all liquor shops and fish stalls are kept closed. Buddhists abstain from sinful deeds and involve in meritorios activities.

It is responsibility of Buddhists to behave according to the Lord Buddha's way of teaching specially, on this sublime day. But it should not be limited only to this Poya day and that must be forever. The best way of respecting the Lord Buddha is, living up to the expectations or the preaching of him.
