SIGNIFICANCE OF           RAINFORESTS

   Forests which help to bring rain are known as rainforests. They are very useful to a country because they directly contribute to bring rain to the earth. When there is no rainforests on the earth there is no rain at all. If there is no water all human activities will come to standstill because nothing can be done without sufficient water. Can you imagine the destruction which may cause due to insufficient water? If there is no water, there will not be any plants or animals on the earth. Then  it would be a desert. It is water which gives life to animals and plants. That is why it is known as the "life blood" of animals and plants. Since rainforests contribute immensely to bring rain to the earth, there is great significance of them.

     

          Generally,tropical rainforests are located around the equater. Therefore, there is frequent rain in these areas. Rainforests are mainly found in Asia, Australia, South and Central America and Africa. In our country Sinharaja is the largest rainforest which has become the habitat of many animals and birds. There are many medicinal plants and useful forest products in them. Sinharaja shelters many kinds of rare birds, reptiles, plants, fish and animals. This has been included in the world heritage list in 1989, as the first national heritage of Sri Lanka by UNESCO. Hence, it is our responsibility to protect this valuable rainforests for future generation. But some unscrupulous people do not understand the value of them. They secretly destroy rainforests for their oown advantage.

So, let's make such people aware of the importance of the rainforests and look them after for our own benefits.
