A FAMOUS PERSON          IN SRI LANKA

      Dr.C.W.W. Kannangara is one of the most famous persons in the field of education in Sri Lanka. He is an eminent educationist who made a lot of changes in the prevailing education system of the country.

       He was born on 13th of October in 1884. He got his primary education at Wesleyan English High School and the secondary education at Richmond College, Galle. He was very clever at studies as well as sports during his childhood. He was really a fine sportsman. He captained the Richmond cricket team. And the same time he excelled in football two.

     He started his carrier as a teacher in Richmond College, Galle and taught in several famous schools in the country. After passing the law examinations, he started practicing law in 1910. He toiled over to bring about reforms in education. He became the minister of education in 1931 who was very successful. The policy of free education is a brain child of him. Threrfore, he is introduced as "The father of free education". It is the greatest contribution that he did for the reforms of education.

         Dr. Kannangara realizedhe necessity of the prevailing educational system. In order to meet these requirements he intoduced central colleges to poor talented children. 5th standard scholarship scheme is also a concept of him. Talented, poor needy students are benefited with his scheme. All the reforms that he made in the field of education still facilitate thousands of needy pupils in the country. Unfortunately he died on 23rd September 1969. All Sri Lankans are really indebted to him.
