       My country

My country is Sri Lanka. It is a small island which is situated in the indian ocean. Therea are 9 provinces and 25 districts in our country. The capital of the country is Sri Jayawardanapura Kotte. Sri Lanka is an agricultural country mainly. It is a developing country. There is a tropical climate in the country as it is situated near the equater. The country has a long history more than 2500 years. My country is internationally famous for cricket. Sri Lankan team won the world cup in 1996 which brought great honour to the country. In the old days, Sri Lanka had been known by many names. Some of the names are "Thaprobane, Thambapanni, Ceylon" and etc. Sri Lanka had been goverened by many kings in the history. King Vijey was the first king of the country. In the past, Sri Lanka was introduced as "The granary of the East" by the foreigners because the country was self-sufficient.

Even though, Sri Lanaka produces some, simple industrial, goods, mainly it depends on agricultural products. It exports tea, rubber and coconuts and imports many industrial goods. It is true that Sri Lanka is very small in extent but it is very beautiful. Many tourists visit my country annually. There are many beautiful places in the country. Peradeniya and Hakgala botanical gardens are very attractive places. Among historical places Sigiriya, Anuradapura and Polonnaruwa are very significant. The longest river is Mahaweli and highest mountain is Piduruthalagala. There are many fascinating waterfalls in the country which have become constant tourist attractions.

Sri lanka is multi national and multi cultural country. There are 4 major nationalities in the country. They are Sinhalese, Tamil, Muslims and Burghers. 4 major religions are Buddhism, Hindunism, Christianity and Islam. Un fortunately, there was an on going war situation in the North and East provinces of the country. Let us live peacefully shedding all the petty differences and protect the country for our younger generation.
